Adopt the Horse of the Month

  Horse Of The Month

Retired Thoroughbred Racehorse

Every month we will be featuring a retired Thoroughbred racehorse that needs a loving home. We believe that our brave and beautiful thoroughbred racehorses deserve a dignified retirement. Our aim is to offer an alternative to owners and trainers - rather than have horses continue to race that are no longer able to compete, LongRun tries to help by fostering, rehabilitating and finding these racehorses permanent adoptive homes and alternative careers as pleasure horses or companion animals.

"Dawn Watcher"
(Thoroughbred Gelding)

   For more info visit:
http://www.longrunretirement.com/dawn_watcher.html

Name:  Dawn Watcher
Breed: Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Breeding:
Numerous-Dawnelo
Colour: Grey/Roan
Birth: 1998

Race History: Stakes-placed, 43 starts, 10 wins, $494,159, 2nd Ontario Jockey Club S., etc.

Notes: This handsome handful earned close to half a million dollars during his six seasons at the track and was good to many people along the way. Woodbine’s leading rider, Emma-Jayne Wilson, learned to gallop on him and has been very generous in her sponsorship of him, while the rest of the Woodbine jockey colony anted up to take care of him when he was first retired. Recently, his breeders, Jeff and Anabelle Begg, stepped up to the plate as well, donating enough that Dawn Watcher is “financially solvent” through 2007. This should give him lots of time to settle into his retirement and give us lots of time to evaluate Dawn Watcher and find him the permanent, loving home he so richly deserves.

About LongRun

We believe that our brave and beautiful thoroughbred racehorses deserve a dignified retirement. Our aim is to offer an alternative to owners and trainers - rather than have horses continue to race that are no longer able to compete, LongRun tries to help by fostering, rehabilitating and finding these racehorses permanent adoptive homes and alternative careers as pleasure horses or companion animals.

We also aim to educate the Ontario thoroughbred racing community, as well as the public, about these alternatives for retired racehorses through our work.

What you can expect from an ex-racehorse
The thoroughbred is a beautiful, versatile and athletic breed, which can proudly trace its bloodlines back many centuries. It is our belief that it is a privilege to be a part of their lives and custodians of their welfare. They race for our pleasure – it’s only right we provide them with a happy retirement after their racing days are over.

With time and patience, almost all thoroughbreds can become the most loving and gentlest of companions and, with re-training, most of our graduates have gone on to second careers as riding horses, some with show potential!
